in marin city with the search for a gunman. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. at this point deputies say they don't have a suspect description. but as you guys mentioned actively here on scene still gathering evidence and clearing out this area. just to let you know, deputies say this happened around 12:16 this morning. they received multiple 911 calls from the 300 block of drake avenue. when they got here they found a 17-year-old boy shot with multiple gunshot wounds. deputies say he was surrounded by several witnesses, one trying to revive him. unfortunately, it was no use. authorities also tried to administer cpr. he was pronounced dead a short tim after. the boy's sister said he was visiting and got here a few days ago. >> nobody knows him here. he came out and visited a long time ago. nobody knows him. he had no beef with nobody out here. just turned 17 four days ago.

>> reporter: his sister says he was a high school student visiting from weed, california. as for what happened before the shooting, investigators are still interviewing witness to piece together what happened and those details. we want to make note, this is the first homicide for marin city. deputies say they will be here throughout the morning. live in marin city, cate caugiran, cbs 5. nearly 2500 people in the east bay are without power this morning. we just got off the phone with pg&e and they tell us the outage is affecting customers in dublin, pleasanton and livermore. no word on the cause. they are not sure when they will get the lights back on. a tough morning to lose power because freeze warnings are in effect for parts of the bay area this morning. the north bay valleys will remain in the cold. frost advisory in effect. in livermore people bundled up for the unseasonable chilly

temperatures. >> got the jacket and, you know, shirt and t-shirt. >> it seems to be colder. seems colder this year than last year. >> everyone is layered up. the big chill could have been worse. let's check on the temperatures with elizabeth. if you don't have power, that is not good. >> not the morning for that. temperatures are slightly warmer in some parts of the bay area. you need clear calm conditions and the winds have picked up a little bit overnight. we are seeing breezy conditions in some parts of the bay area. you can see that flag blowing in the wind there over the by the bay bridge. some temperatures are slightly warmer. 40s in san francisco right now, 44. but fairfield in the upper 20s now, only 28 there and still below freezing as well in napa. oakland right now low 40s. concord coming in slightly above freezing at 35. the national weather service kept the freeze warnings and frost advisories in effect for much of the bay area. it's going to be cold inland, up in the north bay and in the

east bay interior valleys and frost advisories right around the bay. so temperatures could reach into the low 20s or upper 20s to low 30s. still could continue to dip closer to sunrise and if the winds continue to die down. forecasted highs by this afternoon we are expected to see upper 40s to low 50s once again struggling to get into the 50-degree reading mark. otherwise, over the next several days we have another cold morning on tap for tomorrow. in fact, the frost advisories have already been posted for tomorrow morning. and then sunday a ridge of high pressure builds. we have a slight warming trend beginning for next week. and plenty of sunshine and clear skies. that is a check of your weather headlines. for more on your traffic, here gianna. >> slight warming trend in the 50s. traffic backing up in the cash lanes. they still haven't turned on the metering lights so hopefully things will stay "friday light" there but they delays into san francisco. the rest of the bay area

bridges problem-free. 14 minutes between 880 and 101. over to the golden gate bridge, not a lot of problems this morning through here, traffic clear into san francisco. no delays in and out of marin county this morning. capitol corridor delays, train number 520 out of oakland up to 30 minutesches this is due to a mechanical problem so expect that as you take mass transit this morning. the rest of mass transit is on time. the freeways not a lot of problems. we had some early roadwork along 880 in the south bay, 880 in oakland but as you can see in our live shot here, traffic is cruising along northbound and no delays as you work your way into the maze. that's a look at your morning drive. >> we have some new video of a traffic mess in southern california on the freeways there. snow and ice forcing the chp to shut down the grapevine section of i-5 connecting l.a. to the central valley. the area saw several accidents and spinouts in the mountain passes yesterday. and it's mighty frosty right now. so heading that way, take note. >> new this morning, after a week of major problems, the faa

has ordered a complete review of boeing's brand-new 787 dreamliner passenger jet. a news conference is also planned for later this morning. meanwhile, cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is at the san jose international airport where one of those plans will land this morning. >> reporter: good morning. these new reports certainly marring the celebration here at san jose's airport. the flight is set to leave from san jose headed straight to tokyo. this is a big debut flight. it's supposed to leave at 5 minutes before noon today. it is still on schedule. this is the first boeing 787 dreamliner aircraft to fly from the bay area. this model has been flying for over a year. around 4 a.m. today, the faa ordered a comprehensive review of critical systems in that model. this is video from a few hours ago in japan where one of the planes developed a cracked windshield. another one had a fuel leak.

no passengers were injured. no serious consequences. but obviously, concerns. there was also a separate fuel leak and a fire reported on one of the aircrafts earlier this week. cbs aviation analyst chesley sullenberger says it's common for a new aircraft to be still working out kinks. >> no matter how much testing you do, there are some things that, unfortunately, are inevitably discovered during the real world of operational airline flying. >> reporter: now, the 787 is state-of-the-art. it relies on electrical signals to help power the plane so it's more fuel-efficient. also designed around passenger comfort. it costs about $207 million. so if all goes well with the flight today and it least on time, it is set to land in tokyo tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. again, that news conference set for 6:30 our time. we'll bring you the latest. live from san jose international airport, anne makovec, cbs 5. more runway closures are scheduled at sfo this month.

the first shutdown starts tonight at 10:00. one runway will be closed until 8 a.m. monday and that will cut the flights sfo handles over the weekend in half so travelers should expect some delays. it's part of a $400 million enhancement project. runways will be closed for two more weekends this month. 14 department store employees have been rescued by a s.w.a.t. team this morning after a four- hour armed robbery hostage situation down in l.a. the two robbers escaped and they are now on the run. quite a night. it started at this nordstrom rack store around 11 p.m. last night when 911 calls started coming in saying there were armed robbers inside the score. s.w.a.t. teams stormed the mall shutting down the stores evacuating workers. it wasn't until about 3 a.m. they entered nordstrom's and found employees locked in a storage area hiding in bathrooms. police say not clear when the robbers got away. fbi specialists have reached the bottom of another well near linden in the search for more "speed freak" killer

remains. officials expected to reach the bottom sooner but found the well was four times as deep as they initially thought. the bottom is covered with water and it sits more than 200 feet below the surface. csi teams will use a pump to remove the water and allow a camera to get a view around before digging any further. california is steaming toward a budget surplus. and maybe for the foreseeable future. governor jerry brown releasing his $145 billion budget yesterday complete with an $851 million surplus. schools the big winner. k-12 and community colleges will get an extra $3 billion. medi-cal will get an extra $350 million. a billion will go into the rainy day fund. brown says the key now is to hold the line on spending. >> what i think is compassionate, what is good for the state of california, and what we can maintain over time instead of just enjoying a momentary high and then having

the hangover many years later. >> bad news here. california still has a mountain of debt to pay back after borrowing money during those down years. we're learning san jose will not meet its deadline for finding a new police chief. the city had wanted to pick a finalist before current chief chris moore retired next week but cbs 5 found that on thursday, the city is extending its search. a san jose spokesman says there are some strong candidates, but the city is not ready to make a move. next week, four fire stations will shut down over in contra costa county. the stations are in martinez, walnut creek, clayton and lafayette. the remote clayton station will remain open for six hours each day monday through saturday. closures start on tuesday. contra costa county fire protection district is facing a $17 million budget gap. a follow-up on the man at the helm of that oil tanker that bumped a bay bridge tower earlier this week. the bar pilot who was in charge

was sober at the time. an attorney for captain guy kleess says all drug and alcohol tests had come back negative. kleess is an experienced navigator who has had a few minor scrapes over the years. the cause of monday's bump still under investigation. the families of two of the oikos university shooting victims have filed a suit against the school. a 23-year-old and 21-year-old were among the 7 victims of the shootings last april. the families claim the school knew the alleged shooter one goh posed a serious danger after dropping out. goh pled not guilty and was found incompetent to stand trial this week. he is not named in the lawsuit. time now is 6:11. feeling lousy, how to tell if you have the flu or just the common cold. >> plus, sending a strong message. the unprecedented move by a major league baseball to make sure the athletes are playing fair. >> and "snakes on a plane." no, really. dublin but no accidents or incidents now. traffic is clear as you head through there. you can see the eastbound side we are seeing extra cars also. but so far much better than yesterday. yesterday major delays along 580. on the maps here's conditions out of the altamont pass portion. so 18 minutes inching up just a bit but still it's bearable as you head towards 680. westbound 4 though quite busy for a friday. you can see some yellow and red there on our sensors so we are seeing brake lights. eastbound roadwork is long gone so traffic is slow for some reason on this friday morning. we are dealing with some mass transit delays. capitol corridor delays. train number 520 out of emeryville slightly delayed. no other delays for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. 880 looks mighty fine, no delays. southbound clear in hayward and fremont and looks like the golden gate bridge is a nice ride this morning but it is very cold out there this morning, elizabeth. >> yeah. i know. i actually just put in some

current temperatures outside and we're seeing these drop closer to sunrise past 6:00. concord, livermore coming in at freezing. right now at 32 degrees. below freezing in napa, fairfield, so yeah, these winds are starting to die down. clear skies and that's what's keeping temperatures really chilly. still not too bad in places like oakland, 41 degrees. 44 in san francisco. but once again we still have these freeze advisories, frost advisories and frees warnings in effect for the next several hours. national weather service keeping it in there until 8:00 this motts. so temperatures in the 20s to low 30s. bundle up. it's going to remain cold throughout the day. this afternoon we are climbing into the upper 40s in some parts especially in those east bay inland valleys. 49 is your high in places like livermore. otherwise in the low to close to mid-50s but pretty much low 50s. it's going to be as much as we are going by later on this

afternoon. partly sunny skies so similar to yesterday. a system off the coast not expected to bring us rain for the next several days. looks like with our futurecast, staying dry through the weekend. a ridge of high pressure with plenty of sunshine through next week. we'll have the seven-day forecast coming up. in the meantime, back to you guys. president obama will discuss the withdrawal of u.s. troops from afghanistan with president hamid karzai today. karzai made the rounds in washington this week including dinner with secretary of state hillary clinton. an afternoon news conference is set after discussions on the future u.s. role in afghanistan. he also met with defense secretary leon panetta at the pentagon. he reportedly had a western list of military equipment including drones and helicopters. >> be able to provide security to his people and to protect [

indiscernible ] >> the obama administration warns not to expect anything firm on troop numbers that come out of today's meeting. 6:19. the colorado movie theater shooting suspect facing arraignment today. a judge ruled there is enough evidence now for james holmes to go on trial on all of the 166 counts against him. but his lawyers say there is -- they are not ready to enter a plea for their client yet. he is accused of killing 12 and injuring 70 in the shooting last summer. the flu is spreading fast and now the makers of flu vaccine and tamiflu for kids is running short in 45 states. so far california is not one of them. lots of people think they have the flu when really they just have a bad cold. there's a lot of overlap in the symptoms. dr. kim says it's all timing. >> the best way to tell the two apart is with the flu, symptoms hit you like a mack truck.

suddenly out of the blue, you might have a high fever, over 102. you feel muscle aches, overwhelming fatigue. you feel lousy. >> some doctors say this season looks bad because last year was unusually mild. nfl great junior seau suffered from brain disease from football injuries. he committed suicide in may. the results show at the time of his death his brain had abnormalities consistent with people who have repeated blows to the head. saeu played 20 years in the nfl. major league baseball is making an unprecedented move to stop players from using performance-enhancing drugs. starting this next season, the league will conduct random testing for hgh, human growth hormone. all players will be tested at least once. punishments will stay the same as punishments for steroids. a 50 game suspension for the first positive test.

49ers kicker david akers is an good morning. if you're heading to the 49ers play-off game against the packers on sunday, it's going to be partly cloudy and very cool. we are expecting temperatures only in the mid- to upper 40s. we're also going low this morning. we sill have freeze warnings in effect. we'll talk about that coming up. and despite the traffic being light this morning at the bay bridge toll plaza, they turned the metering lights on. so we are seeing a bit of a

spoke with the boy's sister this morning. cate. >> reporter: frank, michelle, that family now struggling to figure out how and why this happened. an investigation is under way. the deputies investigators are still here on the scene and they say they plan to be here throughout the morning. investigators are also trying to piece together what led up to the death of that 17-year- old boy. marin county sheriffs say he was shot and killed in an apartment complex off the 300 block of drake avenue. deputies got numerous 911 calls around midnight. when they got on the scene they found the boy with multiple gunshot wounds and was surrounded by several people trying to save has life. he was pronounced dead at the scene. his sister says he was visiting here from weed, california, and just turned 17 four days ago. >> killed my baby brother for nothing. it happened for absolutely nothing because i know, it happened for nothing basically somebody -- somebody just got the wrong thing, got it

confused, they didn't know him. he is not from out here. >> reporter: now, his sister says he was a high school student and a good kid. she is calling this a mistake. now, investigators say they will spend the day interviewing witnesses and they are asking people with any more information to come forward and help in their investigation. reporting live in marin city, cate caugiran, cbs 5. people are bundled up in the bay area this morning. a freeze warning is in effect for north bay valleys for about 2 more hours. the south bay is under a frost advisory and in livermore people wore jackets for unseasonable chilly temperatures. >> lots of layers, definitely making sure to have gloves. >> i have the jacket and two shirts and t-shirts. >> it seems to be colder than last year. >> keep those sweaters and jackets out. the bay area chill is expected to linger into the weekend. >> yeah. what's up with that, liz? >> what is up with that?

i know. can i fix it? no. we all like to complain about the cold weather, huh? you're used to this coming from denver. this is balmy. >> he would would be in shorts and flip-flops now -- we would be this shorts and flip-flops now in boston. >> temperatures are dipping to below freezing in a lot more parts of the bay area because the winds are starting to die down. we are seeing clear skies. so we need it to be calm and clear and then we'll see those freezing temperatures. so check out some of the current conditions right now. fairfield dropped a couple of more degrees down to 26. concord at freezing 32 degrees. it looks like across the bay area, more mild in places like san rafael and san francisco. napa now 29 degrees. so it's those north bay east bay and south bay valleys where those freeze advisories, freeze warnings are in effect. frost advisories around the bay so people will be using scrapers on the windshields. temperatures expected in the upper 20s to low 30s. how long is the cool weather

this morning. that's where anne is right now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and this is the bay area's inaugural 787 international flight. so it's really going to be a big deal here at the san jose airport. but the celebration is certainly marred by this latest announcement. let's go live now to washington, d.c. slated to speak this morning, national transportation secretary ray lahood and faa administrator michael huerta. that's because just before 4 a.m., the faa ordered a comprehensive review of critical systems in the 787 model. now, here's some video from japan. this came down a few hours ago. that's where one of the planes developed a cracked windshield. now, another plane also had a fuel leak this morning. no passengers were injured, no serious consequences. but obviously concern after a fire and separate fuel leak were reported this week. now, this 787 is known as a

teacher is being hailed as a hero after stepping in to stop a student as he opened fire on classmates. police say the 16-year-old brought a gun to school at taft union high school in kern county yesterday morning. that's about 100 miles north of los angeles. the teen struck a fellow student, then fired two more rounds at others during the first period class. that's when a teacher, ryan heber, started talking to the shooter and convinced him to back down. >> i think at one point he made the statement, he didn't want to shoot the teacher. and ultimately, he put the shotgun down. >> police are investigating reports that the suspect was in trouble at school last year because he allegedly had a hit list. investigators say the gunman said he had been bullied by a couple of students. the victim is in stable condition. next up in the vice president's search for ways to curb gun control a sitdown with videogame produces to discuss factors that could contribute to violent behavior. this meeting is a day after

biden hosted the national rifle association at the white house to talk about gun control. nra left that meeting, however, saying it will not allow law- abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals. a 16-year-old reptile found guarding an east bay marijuana stash has died. mr. teeth, a 5-foot-long dwarf caiman" looks like an alligator. it arrived at the oakland zoo after the pot bus wednesday. he died overnight. the owner faces animal cruelty charges. officers arrested him on marijuana possession charges. the man accused of abducting his children and taking them on a stolen yacht will be back in court in a few hours. this authorities say last september he kidnapped two children from their mother and took them out to sea. the coast guard found them off the coast of monterey three days later. and if you would like to meet the stars from the oakland as, here's your chance. fanfest tickets go on sale to the general public starting

another deer on ice rescue from golden, colorado a place i'm familiar with. he was in the middle of the pond. the ice is 6 inches deep and the deer couldn't get any footing to get off that ice and at one point a coyote came dangerously close to it. finally, a rescuer lassoed the antlers of the deer and then pulled him to safety. >> that's a big buck. >> lately we have seen a lot of these animas trapped on ice. >> they got him off. that's good. >> good thing. >> doesn't even look real. that's like one of stant's deer. >> that would be a reindeer. >> you know -- >> it's cold there. >> it is very cold there. >> we're not quite as cold. these temperatures continue to fall as we get past 6:00. closer to sunrise, at 7:24 this morning, so you can see we're seeing more readings now in the 20s at freezing in concord and livermore. so it's really the north bay, the east bay valleys and parts of the santa clara valley including san jose. we still have that freeze warning in effect.

and frost advisories, as well. so scheduled until 8:00 this morning. that's from the national weather service. expect temperatures to continue into the upper 20s to low 30s in the bay area. you may find frost this morning. by the afternoon, we'll see sunshine. partly sunny skies for the most part a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures are going to struggle to get into the 50s by later on this afternoon. so some areas, livermore for example, coming in at a high -- that's your high of 49 degrees. so any of that rain we saw a little unsettled weather at this time yesterday, that is now all moved farther towards the southeast. we are looking dry for today and really for the next several days through the weekend. you can see it with futurecast. some unsettled weather still sticking off the coast. and saturday, by game time for the big play-off game, it looks like we are going to be dry but pretty cool. how cool? we'll tell you coming up. in the meantime, gianna, she has a problem spot in san jose. >> just reported by chp northbound 101 at tully. we are getting reports of a two-

car crash not blocking lanes. it's in the center divide but we are seeing a line of yellow there along 101. northbound 280 no delays. guadalupe parkway problem-free. live look at conditions along 237 westbound between 880 and 101. a few cars on the road but overall traffic is still "friday light" as you head through this portion of the road this morning. san mateo bridge problem-free in both directions. we are seeing slight delays at the toll plaza at the dumbarton bridge but overall it's a light ride through there. reports of overnight roadwork are wrapped up. the rest of the bridges problem- free. peninsula commute looking good 101, 280 and 92. live look at the bay bridge metering lights on even though traffic is lighter than normal for our typical weekday commute. but again, a bit of a backup there. so give yourself some extra time. back to you guys >> thank you. wells fargo posted a record profit in the fourth quarter of 2012 and the u.s. trade deficit

increases sharply. >> let's chat about it. joining us now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning. another good quarter for wells fargo a record profit. $4.9billion. that was up 25% from a year earlier on a revenue gain of 7% to $21.9 billion. both numbers topping expectations. wells fargo the nation's largest home lender making a big move in the market after other banks pulled out following the housing bust. >> the u.s. trade gap though continues to grow in november. commerce department says it was up 15.8% to $48.7 billion. easy to see why. u.s. exports only grew by 1% due to weakness in europe because of its recession. imports were up 3.8%. a lot of that came from smartphone shipments coming into the u.s. for the holiday season particularly apple's iphone. stock market off to a down start after two strong days in a row. right now the dow is down by
